I wrote a post a while back on my WordPress blog about an episode of the show Ramy that I liked. I think it was the best-written episode of that entire series, and in retrospect, my views on that show have been mixed to say the least. I enjoyed it as a comedy. The story could have been better but hit the right notes at the right times and that was enough to keep me watching. What drew me in originally though, and this was my original reason for watching it, was my interest in what American producers were making of Muslims in the current Hollyweird landscape, and how we’d be “represented”. Much of what I watch now that has Muslims in it is for merely this purpose. Dune also came out which was notorious for its uses of Arabic phrases and imagery and such, which accelerated this conversation. So this is a perfect time to write this post.
It marked a new era after PC culture fixated on integrating Muslims into mass media, rather than vilifying or mocking them as has been the norm with just about every film with religious Muslim characters post 1995, which then accelerated after 2001 as a byproduct of the American regime manufacturing consent for its endless wars. But I’d be lying if I said what representation we have now made me any happier than what we had before, in spite of it being an improvement over being the Bin-Laden boogeyman.
I despise the current situation of western Muslims and their vapid obsession with the so-called “representation” of our people. The first reason is they have no idea what they’re getting into by playing into the hands of the talentless cash-grabbing goons running the American entertainment industry today, with zero foresight or desire to control for themselves. The second is that they’re content with the status quo of not just Muslims but all other minorities being represented solely in the Hollywood framework of how they want us represented.
I never understood the sheer obsession American Muslims have with wanting to be portrayed as “good people”. I get that many of them have been bullied when they were younger; they had their last name or hijab mocked, and from that point on never recovered not just emotionally but spiritually. Everything they advocate for as a result when it comes to the public concerns of Muslims is not originated from pride, strength, and vitality; as much inspirational art is produced from, but insecurity and weakness instead. They dive headfirst at any opportunity to be cogs in the machine of the mass media hive-mind culture, where they get to stand on equal footing as the same freaks and weirdos that have no further goal for the people they make movies of other than to subjugate and subvert them with their incompetent remakes and reboots, films that have no real story and meant only to feed into the color-starved attention spans of the average American burgher. “Oh yes! Did you see Hassan on Midnight Mass when he was explaining to that white lady that WE LOVE JESUS TOO? WHY DON’T WE ALWAYS GET MUSLIM CHARACTERS THAT ARE NORMAL AND GOOD PEOPLE?”
I did not see Midnight Mass. However, I did watch the clips where this Muslim Sheriff takes his time being a good boy to the audience where he scolds and hectors the characters about his resentments, exuding this shameless striving for white respectability that in the real world would barely earn him the right to give monotone speeches at a Democrat political rally. I resented this character just by hearing him talk, in that effeminate scolding manner that has the same spiritual anima as the middle-aged, birth control addicted schoolmarms he claims he despises. This is the only way Hollywood knows how to cast and write minorities, as disciplinary mercs with their “teaching moments” to mentally peg the middle-class leftie academic whites who watch it and then get to pat themselves on the back about how accepting and open-minded they are. A Twitter mutual of mine used the term “Aziz Ansari Americans” to refer to this type of Western Muslim, and I’m yet to come up with a better phrase.
I don’t want characters like this. Many of us thought we did and were ecstatic about being shown, as is the natural human desire to be seen and recognized, but now that I’ve seen it I’m completely revolted both as an artist and a part of the Muslim audience. And regardless, I don’t even want to be seen as a “good person”, or have any more characters written that are so. I want Muslim characters that are real. Those many complicated archetypes from our personal lives and in history with dark tendencies, and the genuine grapple between spiritual submission to Allah and the decadence of modern life. And yes, in some cases you must write Muslim characters that are utterly insane (not in a lame way) if you must to make your point. It’s necessary if you’re a true writer. I want this very much, and I know many of you do as well! Why not create a Netflix or HBO show about the Ottoman sultans and their vicious exploits from the point of view of a Janissary who must tolerate their greed and corruption whilst touting being commanders of the faithful? Why not explore insane characters like Ismail Bin Sharif, the Sultan of Morocco nicknamed Moalay The Bloodthirsty; someone who was devout to his faith but could never satisfy his desires for the flesh of women and blood of his enemies?
If you keep listening to these dorks and think like them, you will never get a depiction of the Muslim pirates who ruled the Mediterranean in the 17th century like Sayyida al-Hurra, the pirate queen of Morocco that had to flee Granada as a child and held a lifelong dream of taking back the place of her birth. She led ships of men that robbed and sunk Spanish ships and ruled the city of Tetouan in her later years. Instead, you get the same redone movie of a blonde lesbian beating up men four times her size. You get horribly done reboots and cape-shit remakes where they shove in a few members of your race and think that’s enough to get even with you. Do you, whether you’re an artist like me or someone merely interested in such things, not want stories that reflect our rich history and sobering reality? Must everything be a left-wing feminist operation that’s whitewashed and wrapped up in rainbow packaging? You want your strong Muslim women in film. Yes, and I want them too. But guess what, we have plenty and none of them are what you CLAIM to want or like. Many, like Sayyida al-Hurra, are dark characters of history with free spirits much like that of roaming barbarians who due to their eccentricity and not in spite of it led such unique lives. Also, to write about such women would be to expose that they’re tragic anomalies amongst their gender, not to be seen for another hundred years maybe after appearing.
Go ahead and hope and blabber about your perfect cookie-cutter Muslim characters, who tell Karen about how much of a hard time they had after 9/11. But I’m not one to tolerate nor write such characters. What ends up happening when you continue portraying us in that weak and submissive light isn’t that you get the approval of those people that actually hate you, instead all you do is make your characters flat and boring. You make it such that they’ll easily be forgotten in a few years (or months) much like Game of Thrones was after its showrunners royally screwed up what was meant to be a GOAT series.
You may not be a lunatic like me and want HQ renders of the mayhem that occured in the Battle of Yarmouk and Sagrajas (two incredible Muslim victories, when we were a formidable force). But if you take one thing from this, it’s to stop thinking in their framework when it comes to the kinds of characters you want to see. In other words don’t just think outside the box, think outside THEIR box.
Maybe eventually there are better platforms for us, but we can’t hope for something like that any time soon. For now, stop accepting the current disgrace called “representation” and “diversity” and recognize what this vapid culture wants you to sacrifice in order to gain it. They want you to believe that in order for us to be represented we also have to tolerate their buck-breaking. That we must accept LGBTQ propaganda, endless emasculations both subtle and explicit that neuter the Muslim man and put him in the position of either being the helpless victim or the mercenary for the 300lb POC liberal journo lady behind the scenes. Do not get me started on the sick shit they have in store and already display when it comes to Muslim/Hijabi women as a result of their own sexual insecurities, which is a subject that deserves its own post. You don’t have to tolerate any of this to have good films with memorable Muslim characters. And none of it would be worth it even if it were true.
P.S. : In case you thought I was alone in this:
Most Muslims, especially men, would rather continue to be portrayed as terrorist ghouls than be a part of the globalist LGBT Junta. Need I say more?
Well said!

This would be epic!
